Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm Open Repair
If you need surgery to repair an aneurysm, you’re in skilled, experienced hands at Lehigh Valley Health Network. We are the third largest heart program in Pennsylvania and are recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for heart care and heart surgery. Our board-certified surgeons, assisted by nurses and support staff who specialize in heart care, use the latest surgical devices and techniques.
The type of surgery you need depends on the location of the aneurysm and your tolerance for the procedure. If the aneurysm is located on the section of the aorta that ascends from your heart, a large incision may be made through the breastbone. If the aneurysm is located on the descending portion of your aorta, a large incision may extend from the back under the shoulder blade around the side of the rib cage to just under the breast. These approaches allow your surgeon to clearly see the portion of the aorta that needs to be reconstructed.
If you have diabetes and need heart surgery, your blood sugar will be monitored and maintained at healthy levels during the surgery. This reduces the risk for infection and helps you recover more quickly.
